general ENTERTAINMENT FAQ

Line management, outdoors vs indoors, age requirements, open to the public events, packages, and more

  • Why pay additional vendors to decorate your event when we can decorate it and entertain your guests?

We’ll save you hiring additional vendors, and we’ll give you a discount on your decor!

We show up early, we decorate the party, we entertain the guests, we clean it up: you get the credit

You save time, you save money, you save stress

We even offer certain deals with decor that give you a FREE hour of entertainment!

  • The artists cannot actively monitor the line: as our primary job is to focus on the guest that we are currently serving

One of two line management systems must be in place for any event with more than an average of 10 guests coming through the line per hour

    Option 1: A Line manager

    Option 2: Ticket System

  • A Line manager is anyone over the age of 18 who can actively monitor the line, field questions, handle any and all disputes that may arise within the line, ensure that the person on-deck is ready with their choice selected, and most importantly: this is the person in charge of cutting the line off when given the direction from the artist

A line manager can be provided by the event or brought by the Rockin’ Robots for an additional fee per hour

One line manager must be present for every line

  • The artist hands out numbered tickets at the top of each hour (1 ticket for every person that the artist is able to service within that hour) and as the hour progresses the line manager will shout out the numbers

Each number will be called two times: allowing the guests to come up to the artist and exchange their ticket for the service.

This system allows the guests to walk around and enjoy the event and check back once in a while to see the status of the line (much like the deli counter at the grocery store) and conveys a “no line” experience

The ticket system requires a line manager

  • As many as you want - we have done this for a very long time and can tell you what works best:

2 hour events with 15 guests or less and 1 artist: up to 2 services

2 hour events with 50 guests or less and 2 artists: up to 2 services

We recommend adding on additional time or additional artists if your event exceeds this headcount within this timeframe and/or you’d like additional services

  • When we are at larger event: we know how long it takes for someone to get through our line after the first hour (based on some really boring statistics we won’t get into)

if we are hired for a 3 hour event, and we know we have a 30 minute line - that means 30 minutes prior to our end time: we’ll have our line manager stand at the very back of our line and not let anyone else in for these final 30 minutes

This allows us to end on time: we might have another event to get to behind this event - and you wouldn’t want us to be late to your event would you? Exactly!

Well, during that 30 minutes, what can happen?

The line of course, appears to be getting shorter and shorter now - those people who didn’t get in our line before because it appeared too long are suddenly thinking “WOW that line is short! I’m getting in line now!”

(*It’s important to note here that a line manager needs to be pretty thick skinned because of this next part)

Those people will come and try to get in line now: they’ll try to weasel in with others in line, they’ll try the “it’s just my one kid”, or they will say “I was in line for cotton candy and this line was SO long and I was waiting for it to get shorter and now it is”

The line manager simply says: “Sorry, they are only here for x more minutes and they can only serve these final people in that time frame - they have another event to get to right behind this one”

*See “Will you refuse anyone?” if you have more questions about this

  • To avoid the spread of germs and potential infections: guests with cold sores, rashes, runny noses, who are or appear to be sick will not be able to sit for any type of body art.

All minors must have adult supervision

We have the right to refuse service to anyone who we find to be inconsiderate, offensive, or rude to any of our artists, staff, or others waiting in line

This includes parents being disrespectful to the artists and/or other guests: we will ask the parents and their children to leave the line

Face Painting FAQ

Face Painting, Body Painting, Belly Painting, Bling Bar, Unicorn Horns, Monster Horns, & Private Appointments

  • We charge per hour and typically have a 2 hour minimum on Saturdays and Sundays and a 90 minute minimum during the weekdays

We charge per person when we are at events such as Dexter Daze, Howell Melon Festival, Milford Memories, Farmer’s Markets, and other open to the public events & art festivals where we have paid to have a booth space - our fee is typically $15/per face

Private appointments & belly paintings are quoted by Nikki ahead of time

  • We prefer to paint at the speed of 8-10 people per hour: this allows us to create the unique, detailed faces that you see on our website

For high-volume events: we can paint quicker quarter face designs, offering 3-6 options, at the speed of approximately 15-20 people per hour

  • We focus our face painting on full faces and half faces that are elaborate & detailed rather than quick, smaller designs

The designs we create are always catered to the face shape and the person’s level of patience in our chair

  • Bling Bar is our Adult & Teen-Focused Body & Face Painting Service

We bring jewels, gems, chunky glitter, feathers, stencils and anything else sparkly or cool that we have found has been popular with this unique service

We don’t bring any sort of choice board - our guest sits in the chair and trusts us to create a unique piece of art that enhances elaborates on the person’s face, dress, costume, etc - we typically do this on the eye and add gems, feathers, stencil work, glitter and more

This is a very popular service for bar & bat mitzvahs, bachelorette parties, bar nights, wedding receptions, adult birthday parties, sweet 16, and other adult/teen centered events

Yes - we will also perform this service on tweens and younger children however there is a bit of patience involved

All genders love this service - don’t worry! Check out our chapeaux bling bar below if you would like this service elevated with unique balloon fashionable creations added on for your guests as well

  • Our 3D Unicorn Horns & 3D Monster Horns are an add-on service for any of our face & body painting services offered.

Each horn is unique and hand created completely by the Rockin’ Robot Staff one at a time out of polymer clay and safely glued onto the skin using a cosmetic glue to enhance a face painting design

Kitty face painting? Unikitty! Wonder Woman? Wonder-Corn! Skeleton? Skeleton Monster! Check out the Face Painting Gallery to see some photos of our face painting with these cool horns on the designs and how cool it can enhance the look!

We suggest ages 8+ for 3D pieces - after they fall off (which, obviously they will) they can be used again and again with any type of cosmetic glue

  • Yes - almost any design can be accommodated on the arm, leg, thigh, shoulder, back, chest, stomach etc

We also take private painting appointments for full elaborate face paintings and full body paintings for models, commercials, photography sessions, Halloween, and more

  • Ideal conditions for outdoor painting is: Not windy, no precipitation, 65-75 degrees, access to warm running water, and we must be under a tent/pavilion

If these accommodations cannot be met - we will need to be indoors in a controlled climate

This is not only for our comfort, the children's comfort, and everyone's general moodiness: but also for the quality of our work and our paints: too hot and our paints can melt, too cold and our paints won’t paint!

  • We ask that you provide us with a standard height table with good lighting, and ask that we are away from large stinky trash receptacles and loud speakers

We bring our own tall chair and our special painting kit

  • The FDA and our liability insurance says:

The youngest age that we can face paint is 3

We have found that 4-5 is the best age to begin face painting, but really love to paint older children, teens, and adults the most: we really like to create full faces with a lot of detail

  • We use top quality professional products that are all FDA compliant and made for cosmetic purposes - most of which are a water activated or powder based paint. We do not use alcohol based products except for in private appointments

Some of our brands include: Wolfe FX, TAG, and Paradise

We will not and do not use craft paints or craft glitters

If you have any type of allergy: please ask your artist to perform a patch test on your arm before painting on your face

  • Most of our face paint is water activated. This means to get the face paint onto the skin: we need to get it wet first - and to get it off the skin, it needs to get wet. This also means that if the skin is too wet (sweaty/rainy) the paint can slip off

We do have other paint with a powder base that can take a little more work to rinse off and we will use these paints on excessively hot and sweaty days/children

Our face paint will wash off pretty easily once it is reactivated with water: rain, pool water, a baby wipe, or the bathtub - We instruct parents to wash with with soapy water and a washcloth

Some darker colors may linger or may take additional swipes and some fairer toned skin may have different results than others

We do not suggest going to bed with face paint on and wearing it a second day: but face paint can last

In private appointments: we use other paints, products, and sealers before and after painting to allow the looks we are creating to last the desired time the client needs

  • Most of the time: the kids want to watch their friends get painted. We usually try to encourage the older children to allow the younger children to get painted first so that their patience isn’t expelled too early

  • Yes! Have you been asked to face paint for your school event or church and been left with a huge line of kids and crying with no end in sight?

Do you just want something for your teenager to make some money doing this summer?

Maybe your kid is super good at art and hey - this could be cool for them!

We offer classes that set you up with a basic face painting kit and teach you how to face paint just like the Rockin’ Robots

We also offer classes on how to create our bling, our 3D unicorn horns, and our 3D monster horns - these classes are also going to be available online on our website soon

    We recommend ages 14+

Henna FAQ

Henna, Henna Belly Blessings, Small Groups, & Private Appointments

  • We charge per hour and typically have a 2 hour minimum on Saturdays and Sundays and a 90 minute minimum during the weekdays

We charge per person when we are at events such as Dexter Daze, Howell Melon Festival, Milford Memories, Farmer’s Markets, and other open to the public events & art festivals where we have paid to have a booth space - our fee is typically $20/per henna

Private appointments, small groups, & private henna belly blessings are quoted by Nikki ahead of time

  • Small groups are 3-9 people - 10 or more people would be our normal hourly packages

Two ways to do a small group:

    1. Split the cost evenly among the group: An album of options will be sent to the host, and everyone in the small group has to choose something from this album to keep within the time limit. If someone in the group would like to bring something from their own inspo board: that’s fine - I will adjust the design to fit the time limits accordingly (which may completely change the design) - this option is best if you’re seeking out a ‘girls night’ and don’t have something specific in mind that you necessarily want

    2. Each person sends what they want created for them, and I send the quote and the timeslot needed back to the host: the host can choose if they want the guests to pay for their individual pieces or split the cost evenly. This option is best if you’re looking to get something really fancy and elaborate and allows the guests to get exactly what they want

  • Henna is wonderful in the sense that we can create and elaborate as little or as much as we want on a design. We can use a inspiration for a design and turn it into a 30 second henna application or a 3 hour private appointment

For high-volume events: we can apply henna at the speed of approximately 15-20 people per hour, per artist

The paste is applied wet and raised (it looks similar to chocolate frosting) and is left to soak into the skin for 4-8 hours; the longer the paste is in contact with the skin the deeper, darker and longer lasting the stain will be. Heat helps to drive the dye into the skin and cause it to become dark. After the paste dries: it slowly flakes off leaving a stain on the skin behind

  • Jess & I have very different preferences on the type of henna they apply - I really love to create floral, flowery, mandalas, symmetrical round pieces while Jess is really into geometrical shapes and patterns inspired by the moroccan styles you see in henna - but we both have been doing this for so long that we can both do pretty much anything

The henna designs we apply are always catered to the person and the part of the body they want it applied to: basically anything can be applied anywhere despite where the “inspiration” photo shows it - we will adjust the shape and size to fit accordingly

  • Yes - almost any design can be accommodated on the hand, fingers, arm, leg, thigh, shoulder, back, chest, stomach etc

We will NOT apply henna on the face

We also take private painting appointments for full elaborate henna designs for models, bachelorette parties, commercials, photography sessions, Halloween, and more

  • Ideal conditions for outdoor henna is: Sunny, not too windy, no precipitation, 65-80 degrees, and we prefer be under a tent/pavilion or a heavily shaded tree

If these accommodations cannot be met - we will need to be indoors in a controlled climate

Henna is our only service that we actually love to do outdoors in summer: as henna dries it creates an “air conditioning” on the body

Doing henna outdoors in the colder months is not recommended: as it will do the opposite and you’ll feel extremely cold and it takes very long to dry

  • We ask that you provide us with a standard height table with good lighting, two chairs for each artist, and ask that we are away from large stinky trash receptacles and loud speakers

We can also do henna seated on a lounge full of huge pillows and sofas - we just need a spot to be able to put our supplies out on a table (a nice sized end-table can suffice for this)

  • The FDA and our liability insurance says:

The youngest age that we can apply henna is 8

We have found that 10 is the best age to begin henna: as this is the age that they are patient enough to sit still for the application and understand that they must not let anyone bump into them while it dries

  • We create all of our henna ourselves using sifted henna powder, coffee or tea, lemons, oranges, and eucalyptus essential oils

It is completely safe, organic, and technically: Edible (But I wouldn’t eat it - it’s kind of gross)

We do NOT use black henna - and if you ever have the opportunity to get it: do not get it (take a quick google search for “Black Henna reactions” and see what I mean)

  • Designs last about 7-10 days, depending on body chemistry, how long the paste was allowed to soak in, and the location of the design on the body.

It is longest lasting on hands & feet, fading more quickly on arms, chest, & back where the skin is thinner.

The color will be a light orange at first and deepens to a reddish-brown during the next 48 hours, fading away gradually as your skin exfoliates.

  • The henna plant is one of the oldest cosmetics ever used and is extremely safe

Natural red henna, when applied to the skin rarely causes any adverse reactions, if you are concerned you should do a small patch test first. Natural henna is safe even for use on children as it contains no dangerous chemical dyes or harsh additives

Henna feels like lotion and is cooling. Application of henna can be quite relaxing and enjoyable, especially in the warm summer months as it’s cooling and soothing to the skin

Henna is completely temporary. The skin is not broken as in traditional tattooing. When the paste is applied to the skin it feels cool, this is due to the natural cooling properties of the henna plant. You may feel tingling or tickling. This is caused by the essential oils such as eucalyptus

  • White Henna (and other colors of henna) is actually not henna at all: It’s a paint that is applied just like henna, but dries on the skin. It does not last quite as long as henna may last - but it allows for additional colors to be used within a design

  • Yes! If you’re looking for something fun and unique for an evening with your friends Nikki loves to teach henna!

This is a class recommended for 18+

It teaches you all about henna, the principles of henna design, how to apply henna, creating henna designs, and you can also add on our henna recipe portion where we’ll make a batch of henna with you!

Glow Parties

Glow in the dark painting, UV painting, UV REACTIVE parties, Black Light Parties, Neon Glow Balloons, etc

  • There is no such thing as glow in the dark face paint or glow in the dark body paint

There is UV-reactive body paint and uv reactive face paint - for this to work you will need to use the correct UV lighting conditions

  • There is no such thing as glow in the dark balloons

There are UV-reactive and neon balloons - for them to work you will need to use the correct UV lighting conditions

Alternatively you can also opt for a “Glow Party” which does not use any UV-Reactive or Neon balloons, and instead we illuminate the balloons interiorly with LED bulbs

  • We recommend complete darkness and using UV black light, ultra violet curing, etc - this lighting will need to be shining directly on any surface that you wish to “react” and glow

Additionally you may opt to use uplighting in blues and purples along the walls (this will not create more UV reaction, only add more to the mood and create more light)

  • We recommend complete darkness and using uplighting around the space to illuminate the room to your desired “glowing” color

  • Depending on the size/scale of your party: you can get many of these lights online, rent them from lighting services, or ask your DJ or venue if they are able to provide them for you

We also have many vendors that we can recommend regarding light-up marquee letters

Any and all lights inside of the balloons or UV reactive balloons will be handled by the Rockin’ Robots

Balloon Twisting FAQ

Balloon Animals, Balloon Twisted Creations, The Chapeaux Bling Bar, and Adding Balloon Twisted Embellishments into decor

  • We charge per hour and typically have a 2 hour minimum on Saturdays and Sundays and a 90 minute minimum during the weekdays

We charge per balloon animal/creation when a client would like to add balloon twisted elements into a decor piece

We charge per balloon animal/creation if the client hires us to face paint, but would like to add on balloon animals as ‘hand-outs’ (ie: as the take-home/party favor, centerpieces, etc) without having a secondary artist on-site (usually this means the artist has brought them ready in a bag to hand to the host to handle after the artist leaves the event)

  • Well of course this depends on the creation: a 1-balloon-dog can quickly be twisted behind our backs with our eyes closed in about 30 seconds while something really fancy like a balloon hat with a feather and a light inside or a jet pack with flames coming out of the bottom could take us anywhere from 3-15 minutes

Sometimes we pander with the kids before we begin and do little silly balloon tricks depending on the event as well (not magic - we are not magicians - just silly tricks)

The short answer is: we can usually adjust most creations to fit the length of the line/patience of the child

For high-volume events: we either bring our fastest/most easily adjustable options to “plow” through the line as quickly as possible or play balloon games to allow for fancier options to come out but serve less people to allow for no line at all (see more about this below)

  • We focus our balloon twisting on what we personally think is most fun and has gotten the best reactions from our clients (young and old) over the past decade, but we try to anticipate what will happen with the options offered after it is handed off and this can inevitably be the deciding factor for the options we bring to an event

We like to offer wearables as often as possible to avoid balloons getting blown away, taken by others, or handed off to an adult (I know I love when my kids hand me things to hold all night long), while also offering options you’ve probably never seen twisted before

  • The Rockin’ Chapeaux Bling Bar is our Adult & Teen-Focused Balloon Fashion Services

Two of our talented artists come along to your event with our Bling Bar Kit and Balloon Twisting Kit

LED lights, feathers, jewels, gems, chunky glitter, stencils and anything else sparkly or cool that we have found has been popular with this unique service

We don’t bring any sort of choice board - our guest sits in the chair and trusts us to create for them based on their own beauty and uniqueness

Typically we create something for them to wear out of balloons such as a hair piece, hat, headband, bracelet, etc) and something to enhance their make-up on one eye

This service is also available without the make-up if you would only like the balloon creations for your guests

  • Honestly we don’t love to balloon twist outside

Ideal conditions for outdoor twisting is: Not even a LICK of wind, absolutely no precipitation, 65-75 degrees, and we must be under a tent/pavilion (ideally with walls surrounding us)

If these accommodations cannot be met - we will need to be indoors in a controlled climate

If you need more information on this, please read the next FAQ about why twisting outside can be the worst

  • 1. Balloon science! Air inside of the balloons WILL expand if it is too hot outside: that means the balloons can pop really easily in the heat/sun (especially when we use any type of dark color) And on the flip side: the air inside will contract if the air is too cold outside which can cause an intricately twisted animal to become unraveled really easily

    2. The wind: It makes it harder for us to twist in general, but mostly for reason 3

    3. Poppable surfaces: Outdoors introduces a LOT of poppable areas that aren’t usually indoors that young kids (and sadly even adults) don’t usually think about looking out for: brick walls, low hanging branches with prickly pokes, tree trunks with loose bark, swing sets with sharp chains, grass, bushes, decks, hot blacktop, gravel: and if there’s one sudden whip of wind there goes the balloon animal we spent time creating for that person aaaaand pop!

  • We ask that you provide us with a standard height table with good lighting, up against a wall, indoors (please read about being outside), and ask that we are away from large stinky trash receptacles and loud speakers

We bring a big bag with a bunch of really cool colorful balloons and a cool electric balloon pump that we put on the table

  • Our balloon twisting brands are qualatex, betallic, sempertex, reflex, and gemar. They are all made of biodegradable latex and come from rubber trees

Otherwise in our kit we use sharpie markers, edding markers, scissors, LED lights, a castration device (you don’t want to know what it’s for, but we can promise it’s not for that) buffalo snow, headbands, alligator clips, hairties, rubber bands, scissors, hand pumps, electric pumps, feathers, and other fun props we might pick up and bring along

  • The FDA and our liability insurance says:

The youngest age that we can balloon twist for is 3 - but we will hand a balloon to any adult… and what an adult chooses to do with that balloon is 100% their responsibility

As a note: balloons are very popular with people of all ages: young children, teens, adults, and seniors - it’s really hard to not smile when balloon twisting comes out

  • Sad day, we know! The popped balloon animal fix depends on the event and the choices we were offering - so this answer might not fit every event. And keep in mind that overall: fairness is not always equal.

In almost every case - you have to get back in line just like you would have to if you spilled your popcorn at the movie theater, dropped your ice cream cone at Disney World, or needed to return merchandise at Target. And just like in all of those cases - we ask that you “bring the receipt” with you (aka: the original balloon creation” - or what’s remaining of it)

If this was an insanely intricate balloon animal and only a portion of it was destroyed (and we have time): we do what we call “balloon surgery” and blow up the portion that was broken and put it back together again - if we don’t have time to fix the original creation back to new: we offer a quicker option*

If your original creation was completely destroyed and we determine that we do not have the time to fix it we usually offer a quicker option and replace your balloon*

In other cases: there may not be time for a redo or a fix at all*

*This is usually due to those we have left to serve at the event and the time we have left to be at the event. We have to serve everyone at least one time that is in this line, and while we understand that it is a sad day when a balloon pops, you did already get to see something get created special, and some of the people in line behind you may not have gotten to get their special creation yet. Remember that fairness is not always equal

  • Watch us.

A lot of times we’ll ask the person who’s turn it is to make their choice ‘in secret’ with us and the friends will surround us and try to guess what we’re building the entire process. Most of the time the kids don’t mind waiting at a private event - open to the public events are a little bit less patient - but it’s usually the parents ;)

  • At high volume events we can play one of our balloon games!

The artist will create a balloon creation of their choosing and based on the results of a game: one child is selected to win that creation!

    The game could be:

A guessing game where the children try to be the first one to correctly guess the creation before it’s completed

A round of musical chairs, with the final winner receiving the balloon creation

Fun sorting person to person games with groups of children and getting them to play together

The caveat is: no one is allowed to receive more than one creation throughout the time the artist is there for the event directing the games - so if someone chooses to play a second time and win again, they must relinquish one of their winning pieces to another child in the crowd who has not yet won.

Playing the games mean: there isn’t a long looming line full of impatient children (and parents) waiting for a balloon animal, people may come and go as they please from the area to participate, and much fancier balloon creations are made than what is usually made at larger events; however it means that not everyone gets a turn and that fewer balloons are handed out.

We do always require a line guard for the balloon games and usually recommend it be one of our other artists since we work best together

We also offer the option to add on

A bag full of pre-twisted balloon animals for the game master to hand out after the event ends. The artist will hand these out to those who didn’t get a chance to win a fancy animal after the event has concluded - we recommend this!

A secondary balloon artist who will twist in an ‘express line’ and offer strictly 1 balloon swords and 1 balloon dogs for those that are 5 and under and are not participating in the games

-Also check out the Balloony Bot Workshop below in the “Classes”

  • Haven’t you heard of the IB4IPP? Well it was written years ago but I’ll explain it for you here!

Basically it states that if the person is not physically present in line, they will not receive a balloon. We’ll outline the common reasons, our answers, all of which result in this policy being enforced

    1. They are too little/too impatient to wait in line

      • Our answer: they are probably too little to get a balloon in the first place

    2. They are here at the event but are doing something else (like getting cotton candy or bouncing in the bounce house)

      • Our answer: they chose to do something that was more important to them than waiting in line to get their balloon created special for them. (You can’t be riding on Space Mountain AND also be riding on the Haunted Mansion, right? Somewhere along the line, they made a choice)

    3. They aren’t even at the event

      • Our answer: Well, they aren’t even here… so they aren’t even accounted for in the headcount for the event by those hiring us, therefore they aren’t accounted for in the time allotted for (Gymnastics tournaments, out of the state, championship soccer sports convention whatevers, I don’t care: they aren’t here - bottom line they aren’t getting one!)

  • Why do we do this? What’s the big deal? Why not just make these extra balloons? It’s just ONE extra balloon animal, right?

Imagine you are a parent in line with a 6-year-old and the person in front of you is also a parent with a child the same age as yours. You have been waiting for approximately 30 minutes, you want to get to the bounce house, the face painting, etc, and now your child really needs to use the bathroom. The line behind you is way longer than it was when you got into it: but thank goodness the person before you is about to step up and request their choice and therefore you are next.

The artist completes the balloon twisted T-Rex, “Oooh! I think I want a T-Rex too!” your child squeals in excitement to you as they begin to step up to the artist.

Just as your child almost reaches the artist: the previous parent steps in front of your child and says

“Great! And my other 6 kids are at a gymnastics tournament in Ohio all weekend: they are going to be SO bummed they missed this! Can you make me six more T-Rex’s? One in red, one in yellow and orange, one in purples, one in silver and black, one in blue and green… ”

Now, you were next: but now 6 children have essentially just cut in front of you… and the rest of the long line behind you

You probably feel angry - the person behind you guffaws, you hear someone else say “Are you kidding me?”

What’s stopping every single person in line from doing something like this to the person behind them?

This is why we created the policy - we’re really doing our very best to keep a smile on our faces, balloon twist fast, and make each and every child feel absolutely special for the couple of minutes they get to spend with us while we make something Rockin’ for them

if someone isn’t there to see it happening for them it’s essentially just a toy being handed to them (or the parent asking for a 2nd balloon for their child… because we aren’t dummies)

  • Yassss - we have two types of balloon twisting classes

The first one is the Balloony Bot Workshop which is one of our activity-based balloon twisting services. We’ll teach groups how to balloon twist very basic creations and set them up for success while also creating an atmosphere of fun and laughter - these are great for school assemblies, team building, rewards nights, and more and are recommended for ages 8+

We also offer classes teach balloon twisting to those who feel that Professor YouTube just isn’t cutting it and they want some hands-on help - whether they want to twist for their school event, church event, family reunion, or start their own business - this is geared at people ages 18+
